Why palladium went unnoticed for so long
For most of the twentieth century palladium cost a fraction of gold and platinum. Jewellers used it as a quiet alternative, buyers often did not even know what they were wearing, and at a valuation it was soon set aside as white metal.
Around the turn of the century that changed: supply from Russia faltered and the rate shot up for the first time. Pieces once put away as insignificant are no longer so today – but they still look exactly as insignificant.
Surprises out of the jewellery box
A concrete pointer: during the Second World War platinum was declared a strategic metal in the United States and jewellers were no longer allowed to work it. For white jewellery they turned to palladium instead – so rings and brooches from the forties are palladium more often than many people think.
Later on the metal kept surfacing in wedding rings and setting work. If you inherit a box of white jewellery, have everything measured before anything leaves the house as silver.
Do not sort, just bring it. What looks like silver may be palladium – and the other way round. We sort the box at the table per metal and per fineness, and you see what every pile brings in.
Recognising it without a stamp
In the hand palladium is barely to be distinguished from silver: at 12.0 and 10.5 grams per cubic centimetre the densities sit close together, and both metals are a bright white. One difference you can see without equipment: silver tarnishes and turns yellow to black, palladium stays bright.
Only a measurement gives certainty. We use X-ray fluorescence (XRF): that analysis shows the composition of every piece, free of charge, without damage and while you watch.
Broken and single counts in full
For old palladium the same holds as for scrap gold: the condition is beside the point. A broken clasp, one cufflink, a bent ring – it is all weighed and settled on the fine weight against the daily rate. With a piece of Pd950 that is 950 thousandths of the weight.

How do I know whether there is palladium in my jewellery box?
That cannot be established by eye; palladium, platinum, white gold and silver look strikingly alike. Bring the box along – we measure every piece free of charge with an X-ray analysis and you know straight away.
What is old palladium worth per gram?
The fineness times the weight times the daily rate. A piece with a Pd950 stamp contains 950 thousandths pure palladium, so that is what is calculated on and not the gross weight. The current price per gram stands on our palladium price page and applies at the table as well, less our margin. So you can work the amount out for yourself beforehand.
Is a broken palladium piece worth less?
No. We settle on the fine weight – the pure palladium inside it – and that does not change because of a break or a missing part. Repairing before selling therefore does not pay.
Why was palladium valued so little in the past?
The metal was cheap and little known for a long time, so nobody paid it any attention. Around the turn of the century Russian supply faltered and the rate rose sharply – the metal in your drawer has stayed the same, its value has not.
Could my silver ring actually be palladium?
Yes, certainly if it is unstamped and still a bright white after years. Silver tarnishes, palladium does not, and in the hand the difference is too small to trust. The X-ray analysis gives certainty within a few minutes.
Is a single palladium piece already worth the trouble?
Yes. The palladium rate per gram sits considerably higher than that of silver, so even one ring or brooch is worth the measurement. The valuation costs nothing and you decide for yourself afterwards.
What identification do I need in order to sell?
You need valid photo identification: a passport, identity card or driving licence. We are legally required to record your details when buying precious metal, jewellery and watches. Without valid identification we are therefore not allowed to buy anything.
When do I receive my money after the sale?
You receive your money as soon as you have agreed to the valuation. Smaller amounts we pay in cash; larger amounts reach your account by bank transfer within 24 hours. You sign the purchase receipt first, and payment follows after that.
