Palladium is expressed in alloys
Palladium too is measured in thousandths. You come across it in white gold alloys, in jewellery stamped 950 or 500, and above all in industry. It is a silvery-white metal from the same group as platinum.
- 999 – technical material: bars, laboratory equipment and contact points in electronics
- 950 – the usual jewellery fineness, found on palladium wedding rings
- 500 – half pure palladium, used for more affordable jewellery
Does your piece read 500 without any further mark? Have it measured. The figure 500 is used for other alloys as well, and the difference in what you receive is considerable.
Overlooked, and therefore often unrecognised
Palladium stays white of its own accord and needs no layer of rhodium, unlike white gold. Nor does it tarnish the way silver does. A ring that is still bright white after years in a drawer is therefore more likely to be palladium or platinum than silver.
It is moreover noticeably lighter than platinum at the same size, and that difference in weight helps us tell the two apart alongside the measurement. We establish the fineness with X-ray analysis, non-destructively and in your presence, because palladium and platinum cannot be told apart with the naked eye.

Questions about selling palladium per alloy
How do I recognise palladium in a piece of jewellery?
By the stamp 950Pd or 500Pd. Without a stamp we establish the fineness with an X-ray analysis, because palladium and platinum cannot be told apart with the naked eye. The measurement takes place in your presence and is free of charge, whether you decide to sell afterwards or not.
Where do I come across palladium?
In white gold alloys, in jewellery stamped 950 or 500, and above all in car catalytic converters. It is a silvery-white metal from the same group as platinum. In jewellery it was used mainly over the past twenty years as a lighter and once cheaper alternative to platinum.
Do you buy catalytic converters?
Loose car catalytic converters we do not buy; palladium in the form of jewellery we certainly do. The content of a converter differs per model and can only be established by analysis, so that is work for a specialised recycler. With a palladium ring or wedding ring you have come to exactly the right place.
Why is the palladium rate so erratic?
The market is small and hangs strongly on the motor industry. A few per cent of difference in demand moves the rate visibly at once – more so than with gold, where the market is many times larger. Our rates page shows the current movement, updated every minute.
