A worked example: 30 grams of 14 carat
A 30-gram link bracelet stamped 585 contains 30 × 0.585 = 17.55 grams of pure gold. That fine weight times the gold rate of the day is the gold value; of that you receive 91 per cent from us for 14 and 18 carat. With the rate on our gold price page you can work out the order of magnitude yourself.
At 18 carat (750) a gram contains over a quarter more gold than at 14 carat. Two bracelets of the same weight can therefore differ clearly in proceeds – the stamp matters.
Link, bangle or charm bracelet
- King’s link and curb – usually solid and heavy; the classic men’s bracelet
- Figaro, anchor and Singapore – lighter, often Italian 18 carat
- Bangle – a closed band, solid or hollow; hollow bangles weigh less than they look
- Charm bracelet – the bracelet and each charm assessed separately, as charms often have their own fineness
- Tennis bracelet – the gold and the stones valued separately
What is deducted from the weight
With a bracelet the non-gold part is mainly in the clasp: a box clasp with a steel spring, a safety catch or a spring ring. We assess the clasp separately and visibly deduct any steel from the weight.
On a charm bracelet the charms are sometimes silver or a different carat from the bracelet. We sort them at the table, so that each fineness is paid at its own price.
A broken clasp is no problem. Do not have it repaired first: the gold value does not change, and a repair costs you money you will not get back.
Branded bracelets are a different story

„I'll start by sharing my experience at the Goud-Wissel office in Eindhoven, where I initially ended up on the advice of an acquaintance. I already found it strange that their website didn't tell me roughly what I would receive per gram [in my case 18-carat gold] for the jewellery I wanted to sell. When I came in, the introductory questions felt like a kind of check on whether I knew what I was talking about. Even more: it gave me the creeping feeling that this conversation would be directly linked to the amount they would offer me for my gold. As a layman, I admitted that the generally known current gold price was my only 'knowledge'. What followed was a whole story about the broad concept of this valuation and a list of elements that made it logical that the buying price came nowhere near it. I had to realise that the basic costs of the gold exchange office: rent / fittings / staff / outsourced melting etc. were taken into account [read: deducted] from what was paid out to the customer at the bottom line. After testing, I was then offered 4,000 in short order. I had seen on a website that X-Goud also has a branch in Eindhoven, and it turned out to be almost around the corner. The owner happened to be there because the premises were being fitted out, but even though I had no appointment I was still received very warmly. After a clear, expert, no-obligation explanation and testing, Ekin named a rather different buying price compared to the Goud-Wisselkantoor where I had been an hour earlier. And luckily I had left to look for a kind of second opinion. X-GOUD bought my jewellery for 7,150!!!!!!!! A GOOD 3,000 MORE! Sorry for the long-winded build-up, but this piece really should have been written entirely in capitals so that everyone clearly reads how, in my view, to put it politely, they rip you off right to your face at the Goud-Wisselkantoor. What is a king’s link bracelet worth?
A king’s link is usually solid and therefore heavy, and its value follows from weight and fineness. At 14 carat it contains 58.5 per cent gold, at 18 carat 75 per cent. We weigh it on a calibrated scale and work out the amount at the table.
Is a hollow bangle worth anything?
Yes, but less than it looks, because a hollow band contains much less gold than a solid one of the same size. Per gram the gold is worth the same. A dent makes no difference: we pay on weight and fineness, not on shape.
How do you deal with the charms on my bracelet?
We take the charms off and assess them separately, because charms often have a different fineness from the bracelet and are sometimes silver. Each fineness is paid at its own price. If you want to keep a charm, you simply take it home.
Should I have the clasp repaired first?
No. A broken clasp or link does not change the gold value, and a repair earns you nothing extra. We assess the clasp separately and visibly deduct a steel spring or any other non-gold part from the weight.
