What is 750 gold? Meaning and value of 18 carat
750 gold contains 750 parts pure gold per 1,000: 75 per cent gold, or 18 carat. It is the standard for jewellery in Belgium, France and Italy and for almost every gold watch. In the Netherlands it is the more valuable counterpart to 585.
What does 750 on gold mean?
750 is a fineness mark in thousandths. It means that three quarters of the metal is pure gold. Unlike 585, the conversion is exact here: 18 of the 24 carat parts is precisely 750 thousandths.
You will find the mark inside a ring, on the clasp of a chain or in the caseback of a watch. Sometimes 18K or 18KT appears alongside or instead of 750; it means the same thing.
750 gold is how many carats?
750 is 18 carat. This is how it compares with the other common finenesses:
- 999 – 24 carat – practically pure gold
- 916 – 22 carat – 91.6 per cent gold
- 750 – 18 carat – 75 per cent gold
- 585 – 14 carat – 58.5 per cent gold
- 375 – 9 carat – 37.5 per cent gold
Why 18 carat is the norm in Belgium
In Belgium and France, 18 carat has long been the usual jewellery gold; in France, anything below 750 could for a long time not even be sold as gold. Anyone in Belgium who inherits an old ring or chain is therefore usually holding 750. In the Netherlands 14 carat is the most worn, with 18 carat mainly in wedding rings, finer jewellery and watches.
The difference is easy to see: 750 is a deeper, warmer yellow than 585. With white gold the difference disappears, because the rhodium layer determines the colour.
How much is 750 gold worth?
Each gram of 750 gold contains 0.75 grams of pure gold, against 0.585 for 14 carat. That is 28 per cent more gold per gram. Two rings of the same weight therefore differ in value by exactly that ratio.
- Step 1. Weigh the piece in grams.
- Step 2. Multiply by 0.75. A 16-gram bracelet contains 16 × 0.75 = 12 grams of pure gold.
- Step 3. Multiply by the gold price per gram. Our current price for 18 carat is on our prices page.
With a gold watch the gold is often a floor under the offer. If the trade value of the model is higher, we offer on that trade value.
Can a 750 hallmark always be trusted?
Usually, but not blindly. Gold-plated jewellery sometimes carries 18K GE or 18K GP: that is a layer of 18 carat on another metal, not solid gold. Falsely stamped work also occurs.
That is why we always measure the fineness, by X-ray analysis or an acid test, while you watch. The valuation is free and without obligation at all 45 of our branches.
