Selling gold at home: how to recognise a genuine valuer

A valuation at home is convenient with an estate, a large collection or if you are not very mobile. But people who are not valuers ring doorbells too. The most important difference: a genuine valuer only comes by appointment, and you make that appointment yourself.

Six signs of a trustworthy home visit

  • You make the appointment. XGOUD never calls unannounced. An appointment always comes from you, online or by phone.
  • You know in advance who is coming. We confirm the appointment with the name and phone number of the valuer.
  • You see the valuer coming. When they set off, you receive a personal link with the expected arrival time, and a notice when the valuer is about a quarter of an hour away. No app is needed.
  • The valuer shows identification at the door. For higher values, two valuers come as standard.
  • Everything happens at your own table. Weighing is done on calibrated scales in front of you, and we do the sum out loud: weight, fineness, rate.
  • You decide, without haste, and you get no cash at the door. If you sell, we pay by bank. If you hand something over, you receive a signed receipt and it is insured.

Warning signs of a doorstep scam

Jewellery fraudsters often play on trust and haste. Be on your guard if someone:

  • rings uninvited and says they are buying gold in the area;
  • poses as someone from the police, the bank or a well-known company, without you having asked for anything;
  • rushes you: 'this price today only';
  • wants to take your jewellery to another room, outside or 'to the car to weigh it';
  • offers cash straight away and gives no receipt.

Is someone ringing your bell uninvited on behalf of XGOUD? Do not let him in and call our head office, on a number you look up yourself, not one the visitor gives you.

What to do if something is not right

  • Do not let anyone in you are not expecting. You are under no obligation to open the door.
  • Check the appointment with the company itself, using a phone number from its website or from your own confirmation.
  • Call 112 if you feel threatened or if something has just happened. For a non-urgent report, call the police, in the Netherlands on 0900-8844.
  • Ask someone to be there. Arrange a home visit at a time when a family member or neighbour can be present. A trustworthy valuer takes that for granted.

Questions about selling gold at home: how to recognise a genuine valuer

Is it safe to let a gold buyer come to my home?

Yes, if you made the appointment yourself, know in advance who is coming, the valuer shows identification and the weighing happens at your own table. Never let in anyone who rings uninvited.

Does XGOUD pay cash at the door?

No. On a home visit we always pay by bank. That is safer for you and for our valuer, and you have a record of the payment.

How do I know when the valuer will arrive?

As soon as the valuer sets off, you receive a personal link with the expected arrival time. When the valuer is about a quarter of an hour away, you get another message. You do not need an app for it.

Your question

Still something unclear?

Ask it here. You will receive a personal reply by email, usually within one working day – no automated message and no phone call you did not ask for.

What others asked

  • We keep your question so that you need not repeat anything
