Sell or keep your gold? How to decide without gambling
Nobody knows what the gold price will do next month. Not us, not the banks and not the analysts either: their forecasts differ widely every year. Waiting for the perfect moment is gambling. If you want to make a decision, these seven questions will serve you better.
Why nobody can predict the gold price
The gold price responds to interest rates, the dollar, unrest in the world and central bank purchases, and none of those can be known in advance. Even after a long rise, the price can rise further or fall. In September 2026, for example, gold fell 3.8 per cent in euros in a single month.
That is why we give no price forecast and no investment advice. What we can give is today’s price and an honest explanation of what it means for your pieces.
Seven questions that make the decision easier
- Do you need the money, and when? An expense that is certain weighs more than a possible gain on the price. If you need the money in six months, waiting carries a risk you do not have to take.
- Does the piece have sentimental value? You sell a wedding ring or your mother’s necklace only once. Sell what you will not miss first: broken jewellery, single earrings, pieces lying in a drawer.
- Is it investment gold or jewellery? Bars and bullion coins are made to be kept and sold; the gap between buying and selling price, the spread, is small there. A piece of jewellery brings in its material value when sold. Waiting changes only the price part of that.
- What does it cost to keep? Gold pays no interest or dividend. A safe and insurance do cost money, and jewellery at home is at risk.
- Can you sell in stages? If you are in doubt, you can sell part now and part later. Then you never sold everything at the wrong moment, and never everything at the best one either.
- Do you know what it brings in today? A free valuation gives you today’s figure, without obligation. A price alert tells you when the rate passes a level you choose yourself.
- What does it mean for tax? In the Netherlands, investment gold counts in box 3, on the reference date of 1 January. In Belgium a capital gains tax on investment gold has applied since 2026; gold jewellery falls outside it.
Look at the price over a longer period
A daily rate says little about direction. Look at the gold price over a week, a month and a year on our gold price page. You then see how large the swings are, and that helps to put a fall of a few per cent in proportion.
Why the gold price in euros sometimes moves differently from the price in dollars is explained in our article on the gold price in euros and dollars.
No investment advice. XGOUD buys precious metals. We tell you what your gold brings in today, not what it will do tomorrow. If you are unsure about a large sum or about tax, ask a financial or tax adviser.

Questions about Sell or keep your gold
Should I sell my gold now?
That depends on your situation, not on a forecast. If you need the money, the piece has no sentimental value and you know today’s amount, selling is an ordinary choice. If in doubt, you can sell in stages.
Will the gold price fall?
Nobody knows. Analysts’ forecasts differ widely, and the gold price responds to interest rates, the dollar and unrest that cannot be known in advance. That is why we give no price forecast.
When is the best time to sell gold?
The best moment is only known in hindsight. More practical: sell when you need the money or when today’s amount seems enough to you, and spread the sale if you are in doubt.
