Three eras, three markets
The hand-wound Daytonas (1963–1988, references 6239 through 6265) run on a Valjoux base calibre and have become collector's items; there the dial variant and the provenance set the figure, not the condition alone.
The 16520 (1988–2000) was the first automatic, using a modified El Primero movement from Zenith. Then came the 116520 with Rolex's own calibre 4130. Since 2016 the 116500LN has run with a ceramic bezel, and since 2023 the 126500LN with calibre 4131.
For the modern references, demand structurally outstrips supply. That is why a Daytona rarely sits with us for long, and why we can put a sharp price on one.
What we look at
- Reference and serial number – underneath the bracelet, on both sides
- Movement – Valjoux 72, Zenith 400, Rolex 4130 or 4131
- Dial – the subdial colour, the text lines and whether the dial is original
- Pushers and crown – threads, sealing and wear
- Papers – on this model, box and card weigh more heavily than on any other Rolex

„I'll start by sharing my experience at the Goud-Wissel office in Eindhoven, where I initially ended up on the advice of an acquaintance. I already found it strange that their website didn't tell me roughly what I would receive per gram [in my case 18-carat gold] for the jewellery I wanted to sell. When I came in, the introductory questions felt like a kind of check on whether I knew what I was talking about. Even more: it gave me the creeping feeling that this conversation would be directly linked to the amount they would offer me for my gold. As a layman, I admitted that the generally known current gold price was my only 'knowledge'. What followed was a whole story about the broad concept of this valuation and a list of elements that made it logical that the buying price came nowhere near it. I had to realise that the basic costs of the gold exchange office: rent / fittings / staff / outsourced melting etc. were taken into account [read: deducted] from what was paid out to the customer at the bottom line. After testing, I was then offered 4,000 in short order. I had seen on a website that X-Goud also has a branch in Eindhoven, and it turned out to be almost around the corner. The owner happened to be there because the premises were being fitted out, but even though I had no appointment I was still received very warmly. After a clear, expert, no-obligation explanation and testing, Ekin named a rather different buying price compared to the Goud-Wisselkantoor where I had been an hour earlier. And luckily I had left to look for a kind of second opinion. X-GOUD bought my jewellery for 7,150!!!!!!!! A GOOD 3,000 MORE! Sorry for the long-winded build-up, but this piece really should have been written entirely in capitals so that everyone clearly reads how, in my view, to put it politely, they rip you off right to your face at the Goud-Wisselkantoor. Questions about selling Rolex Daytona
I have an old Daytona from my father. Is it something special?
It may very well be. Among the hand-wound Daytonas of the sixties and seventies the values vary enormously, and the difference lies in details that no photograph shows: the printing on the dial, the type of pushers, the case number. Bring it in as it is – unpolished, unrepaired – and bring the box and any papers with it. Our watchmaker will take the time and explain what he is looking at.
Why does the box matter so much on a Daytona?
Because this is the model with the most going on around it. A dealer reselling a Daytona has to be able to account for its provenance, and box, warranty card and purchase receipt make that demonstrable. The difference between a full set and a bare watch runs into the thousands on the modern references such as the 116500LN. If you only have part of it, bring that part anyway.
Can you pay for a Daytona immediately?
Yes. Even at the highest amounts, payment goes by bank transfer and the money is in your account within 24 hours; we do not pay cash, and at these sums you would not want us to. You decide for yourself whether to accept the offer – we appraise and substantiate, and the watch stays yours until you say yes.
There is a Zenith movement in my Daytona. Is it worth less?
No, it is a chapter of its own. The 16520 of 1988 to 2000 was the first automatic Daytona and runs on an El Primero from Zenith reworked by Rolex. That movement now has a collectors' market of its own alongside the later 116520 with Rolex's own calibre 4130. The reference under the bracelet already points to which one you have; our watchmaker confirms it by opening the case.
The chronograph on my Daytona has stopped working. Should I have it repaired first?
Please do not. On this model a repair with parts of uncertain origin costs more than it returns; a dealer will take the watch back to original parts anyway. Bring it in as it is. Our watchmaker establishes what is wrong, whether that is a Valjoux, a Zenith or a 4130, and we price the fault into the offer visibly.
