Two figures, and you see both
The Day-Date appeared in 1956 and has always stayed in precious metal: yellow gold, white gold, Everose or platinum. That means there is a material value beneath every offer, one that can be worked out from the scales and today's rate.
Above it stands the trade value, and on a good example with its original President bracelet that is considerably higher. We calculate both figures. Only on a badly damaged or incomplete watch do they come close together – and then you know exactly why.
You recognise platinum by the dial, not by the weight in your hand. At Rolex a platinum Day-Date almost always carries an ice-blue dial; that colour is reserved for this model.

„I'll start by sharing my experience at the Goud-Wissel office in Eindhoven, where I initially ended up on the advice of an acquaintance. I already found it strange that their website didn't tell me roughly what I would receive per gram [in my case 18-carat gold] for the jewellery I wanted to sell. When I came in, the introductory questions felt like a kind of check on whether I knew what I was talking about. Even more: it gave me the creeping feeling that this conversation would be directly linked to the amount they would offer me for my gold. As a layman, I admitted that the generally known current gold price was my only 'knowledge'. What followed was a whole story about the broad concept of this valuation and a list of elements that made it logical that the buying price came nowhere near it. I had to realise that the basic costs of the gold exchange office: rent / fittings / staff / outsourced melting etc. were taken into account [read: deducted] from what was paid out to the customer at the bottom line. After testing, I was then offered 4,000 in short order. I had seen on a website that X-Goud also has a branch in Eindhoven, and it turned out to be almost around the corner. The owner happened to be there because the premises were being fitted out, but even though I had no appointment I was still received very warmly. After a clear, expert, no-obligation explanation and testing, Ekin named a rather different buying price compared to the Goud-Wisselkantoor where I had been an hour earlier. And luckily I had left to look for a kind of second opinion. X-GOUD bought my jewellery for 7,150!!!!!!!! A GOOD 3,000 MORE! Sorry for the long-winded build-up, but this piece really should have been written entirely in capitals so that everyone clearly reads how, in my view, to put it politely, they rip you off right to your face at the Goud-Wisselkantoor. Ekin, thanks again for your friendly service... a pity you couldn't offer coffee yet haha, but the offer for my jewellery more than makes up for it.”

Questions about selling Rolex Day-Date
Will I only get the gold value for my Day-Date?
No, almost never. The gold value is the floor beneath which the offer does not fall, but on a Day-Date in reasonable condition the trade value sits clearly above it – the President is a saleable watch. We show you both figures side by side, so you can see where the offer comes from and what would happen if the watch were valued as material alone.
The bracelet has stretched and sits loosely on my wrist.
That is normal on a gold President bracelet after years of wear: gold is soft and the link pins wear down. A dealer works with the cost of tightening or replacing links, and we account for that fairly in the offer. Do not have the bracelet shortened or repaired by a jeweller who does not use Rolex parts; non-original links cost more than the repair is worth.
There are diamonds on the dial and the bezel. Do they count?
That depends on who set them. Rolex supplied the Day-Date with factory stone setting, and those versions count in full. Stones added later by a third party push the offer down instead: the case and the dial have then been drilled, and that cannot be undone. Our gemmologists and our watchmaker assess them together and tell you what they see.
The day disc is in Dutch. Does that make a difference?
The Day-Date is the only Rolex model with the day spelled out in full, and Rolex supplied that disc in dozens of languages. What counts for the offer is mainly whether the disc belongs to the watch: an English disc in an example delivered in Italy means parts have been swapped. Rare languages have a following of their own, but that is a collectors’ market and not a fixed rule.
Will I be paid for my Day-Date in cash?
Not the whole amount. We pay up to and including € 500 in cash; anything above that goes by bank transfer and is usually in your account within 24 hours. With a Day-Date that is almost always the case. Bring a valid form of identification: when buying precious metal and watches we are legally obliged to register your details.
