Here the version matters more than the age
The Datejust has been running since 1945 and has been made in every conceivable combination. That does not make it rare, but it does make it easy to compare: for almost every version, enough examples have changed hands to base a price on.
What counts: the case size (36 mm classic, 41 mm since the 126300 series), the material (steel, steel with yellow or white gold, or solid gold), the bezel (smooth, fluted in white gold, or set with stones) and the bracelet (jubilee or oyster). A fluted bezel is always white or yellow gold, even on an otherwise steel watch – that is material value, and it comes back in the offer.
What we look at
- Reference – 1601 and 16xx (vintage), 16233 and 162xx, 116xxx, 126xxx
- Calibre – 1570, 3035, 3135 or the current 3235 with its longer power reserve
- Dial – original or replaced, and whether the indices have been reset
- Bezel – fluted gold, smooth steel or stone-set
- Bracelet and clasp – stretch, and whether the clasp code belongs to the watch
An after-market stone-set bezel pushes the value down rather than up. Rolex sets stones itself; third-party work is, for a dealer, a reason to return the watch to an original bezel.
Bicolour: here the material value really is a floor
On a steel Datejust the gold weight is nil and only the trade value counts. On a bicolour or solid gold version there is a material floor beneath the offer: a gold Datejust contains a substantial amount of 750, and that value holds whatever the market does.
We calculate both figures for you. On a well-kept gold Datejust the trade value sits comfortably above the floor; on a heavily polished example with a replaced dial they can move closer together, and then you know immediately why.

„I'll start by sharing my experience at the Goud-Wissel office in Eindhoven, where I initially ended up on the advice of an acquaintance. I already found it strange that their website didn't tell me roughly what I would receive per gram [in my case 18-carat gold] for the jewellery I wanted to sell. When I came in, the introductory questions felt like a kind of check on whether I knew what I was talking about. Even more: it gave me the creeping feeling that this conversation would be directly linked to the amount they would offer me for my gold. As a layman, I admitted that the generally known current gold price was my only 'knowledge'. What followed was a whole story about the broad concept of this valuation and a list of elements that made it logical that the buying price came nowhere near it. I had to realise that the basic costs of the gold exchange office: rent / fittings / staff / outsourced melting etc. were taken into account [read: deducted] from what was paid out to the customer at the bottom line. After testing, I was then offered 4,000 in short order. I had seen on a website that X-Goud also has a branch in Eindhoven, and it turned out to be almost around the corner. The owner happened to be there because the premises were being fitted out, but even though I had no appointment I was still received very warmly. After a clear, expert, no-obligation explanation and testing, Ekin named a rather different buying price compared to the Goud-Wisselkantoor where I had been an hour earlier. And luckily I had left to look for a kind of second opinion. X-GOUD bought my jewellery for 7,150!!!!!!!! A GOOD 3,000 MORE! Sorry for the long-winded build-up, but this piece really should have been written entirely in capitals so that everyone clearly reads how, in my view, to put it politely, they rip you off right to your face at the Goud-Wisselkantoor. Questions about selling Rolex Datejust
Can a 36 mm still be sold, or does everyone want 41?
36 millimetres sells very well indeed. There was a period when everything had to be large, but that has passed; the 36 mm Datejust is now worn by women and men alike and is thoroughly saleable. The 41 mm averages higher, but mainly because those references are newer. We appraise both sizes and tell you what the market is doing for your version at that moment.
My Datejust has an aftermarket dial with diamonds.
Then it depends who did the work. Rolex supplies dials with diamond indices itself, recognisable by the setting and the finish, and those count in full. Third-party setting is a different story: for a dealer it is a watch that has to be returned to an original dial, and he deducts that cost from the offer. Our watchmaker can see the difference under the loupe and will explain it to you.
What if I no longer have the papers?
We can still buy it. On a Datejust, missing papers weigh less heavily than on a Daytona or a Submariner, precisely because so many are traded and because authenticity can be established from the movement. Our watchmaker opens the case and checks calibre and case number, and that is the basis. If you still have the box, bring it – that helps regardless.
My Datejust is steel, but the bezel is fluted. Does that count?
It does. A fluted bezel at Rolex is always white or yellow gold, even on an otherwise steel watch. That is precious metal on your case, and its material value comes back in the offer on top of the trade value of the model. Many sellers do not realise this and assume their Datejust is steel throughout. Our watchmaker establishes which gold it is during the valuation.
My jubilee bracelet has stretched. Should I have it replaced?
No, leave it as it is. Stretch comes with a jubilee bracelet that has been worn for years, and we simply price it in. A third-party replacement bracelet costs you more than the play ever did, because a dealer wants the original bracelet back. We also check whether the code in the clasp belongs with the watch and with its reference.
