The stamp tells the story
Solid silver jewellery nearly always carries a fineness stamp in thousandths: 925 for sterling silver (92.5 per cent pure silver), 835 for much Dutch and German work from the twentieth century, 800 for simpler and older pieces. That figure times the weight times the rate of the day is the basis of your proceeds.
If there is no stamp, that is not a refusal: we establish the fineness with an X-ray analysis, in front of you and without damaging the piece.
You recognise plated work by the absence of a fineness stamp – or by markings such as EPNS (electroplated nickel silver), “silverplate” or alpaca. The silver layer is then a few micrometres thick and not economical to separate; such pieces we cannot buy. If you are unsure, we will look at it with you free of charge.
How to work it out yourself
The sum is the same as with gold: weight times fineness times the rate of the day. A chain of 40 grams with a 925 stamp contains 37 grams of pure silver – the fine weight, the pure precious metal in an object. That fine weight times the gram price on our silver price page gives the order of magnitude of the offer.
The silver price per gram is a fraction of the gold price. One ring is therefore a small amount; the value sits in numbers. So bring the whole jewellery box in one go, including what is broken or unstamped.
Assessed on the material and on the piece
Precisely because silver is modestly priced per gram, the interesting value with silver jewellery often lies above the material. A signed designer piece – Georg Jensen is the best known example, but Tiffany and modern silversmiths count too – is traded per piece, not per gram.
So we look at the signature and the design first, and only then at the scales. If the piece is worth more as jewellery, that is what we offer on – and you hear which of the two amounts it became.

- Polishing – tarnished silver is simply silver; polishing even takes a little material away
- Sorting the real from the false – we separate that at the table, with you watching
- Completing sets – a single earring or a chain without a clasp counts towards the weight all the same
- Removing stones or pearls – we take them off and deduct the weight fairly

How much is 925 silver worth per gram?

Is 835 silver real silver too?
Yes. 835 means 835 thousandths of pure silver, for a long time the usual standard in the Netherlands and Germany. We buy it just as we buy sterling and settle on the fine weight at the rate of the day.
My silver jewellery has turned black, is that a problem?
No, tarnish says nothing about the fineness. It is a surface reaction of silver with sulphur in the air, and the silver underneath is completely intact. So you do not need to polish before you come by. On the contrary: polishing takes a little silver away each time, so do leave it as it is.
How do I see the difference between solid and plated?
Solid silver carries a fineness stamp: 925 for sterling, or 835 and 800 on older work. Plated work carries no fineness, but markings such as EPNS, silverplate, alpaca or a figure like 90 or 100 that refers to the layer thickness. If there is nothing at all, we check it free of charge with an X-ray analysis in front of you.
Are designer pieces worth more than their weight?
Often they are. Signed work by Georg Jensen, for instance, is traded per piece and not per gram. We compare the trade value with the material value and you get the higher of the two, and we tell you which one it was.
Is a handful of silver jewellery worth the trouble?
Silver only adds up in numbers: one ring is a small amount, a boxful is not. So bring everything in one go, including what is broken, because for the material value only the weight counts.
What identification do I need in order to sell?
You need valid photo identification: a passport, identity card or driving licence. We are legally required to record your details when buying precious metal, jewellery and watches. Without valid identification we are not allowed to buy anything.
When do I receive my money after the sale?
You receive your money as soon as you have agreed to the valuation. Smaller amounts are paid in cash; larger amounts reach your account by bank transfer within 24 hours. You sign the purchase receipt first, and payment follows.
